Lighthouse jobs were sometimes awarded to workers that built them. John Adair entered service at the Northern Lighthouse Board 29th May 1822.

John Adair (1791) was the principal lightkeeper at Dunnet Head c. 1833 -1842. It is possible that he was the very first principal lightkeeper there.
